“Mother Mother Ocean, I have heard your call.”
Jimmy Buffett – A Pirate Looks At Forty Lyrics
Time for another family celebration. My sister turned 50 years old on January 12th (also my parents 54th wedding anniversary) and she decided that the whole family should travel to Cabo San Lucas to celebrate with her. Well who am I to say no to a trip especially one to a sunny beach destination. To top it all off, we were lucky enough to be gone and sitting by the pool in 80+ degree sunshine while the rest of Northern California was being drenched with rain.
So off we went to an all inclusive resort located on the ocean in Cabo San Lucas.
Cabos is located on the tip of the 800-mile long Baja California Peninsula, with the Sea of Cortez on one shore and the Pacific Ocean on the other. It makes for wonderful wildlife habitat (as shown in my previous post about the whales and turtles) as well as a very popular vacation destination.
For those that don’t know, an all inclusive resort provides continually flowing alcohol, food and activities. It was interesting to see the very wide age range of visitors at this 900+ room resort. Over half the folks we met were from Canada, escaping the cold weather for the sunny beaches of Baja.
“It’s these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of our running and all of our cunning
If we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane”
Jimmy Buffett – Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes Lyrics
I have to admit that this type of destination and resort (crowds and craziness) are not exactly my cup of tea but spending the week with family was a great experience.
There were plenty of opportunities to get away from the crowds including walks down the long stretch of beach in front of the resort.
With the help of the oversized infinity pool with a design on the bottom that served as wonderful lane lines I was able to get in some great lap swimming early in the morning before most of the resort was even up for breakfast.
“The water is your friend…..you don’t have to fight with water, just share the same spirit as the water, and it will help you move.” – Alexandr Popov
I was even able to get out on the water one day – stand up paddling while my Dad paddled a kayak alongside. It was quite windy and rough with made for interesting and challenging conditions but any day on the water is a good day!
Of course we could not miss a day of shopping and sightseeing in town. It is certainly a town designed for nightlife and tourism.
“I’m growing older but not up
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
Let those winds of change blow over my head
I’d rather die while I’m living than live while I’m dead”
Jimmy Buffett – Growing Older But Not Up Lyrics
Thanks Sis for organizing a great trip and Happy 50th Birthday!
