Colorado State Parks are managed by the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife. If the two campgrounds that we have tried are any indication, this State is doing a great job of providing beautiful campgrounds with great services.
Our first stay in Colorado was at James M Robb Colorado River State Park – Fruita Section.
This campground provided full hookups (in the area we were in), well maintained sites, friendly staff and a camper services building which served as restrooms, showers and laundry facilities. Our site was one of the best (in my opinion) as it had a beautiful view looking out toward Colorado National Monument.
Our campsite at James M Robb Colorado River State Park
Our current location is at Ridgway State Park, camping in the Dakota Terraces campground (there are three campgrounds in this park). This park also has well maintained sites, friendly staff and the camper services facilities. We are in a section that has only electric hookups but there are full hookups available in one of the other campgrounds. This park is fairly new having been developed in the early 90’s after the dam was built in 1987. One caution for RV’ers camping here, many of the sites (especially in the Dakota Terraces section) are on a slope and it may be
difficult to level a larger RV. We are seeing several rigs here that have one or two wheels up in the air!
One last interesting note about Colorado State Park fees – the day use fee is not included in the camping fee and you are required to pay this each day on top of the campsite rate. We solved this by buying an annual pass for $70, which covers our day use while we are camping and visiting the Colorado State Parks for a year. I talked with one of the Rangers, as I was curious if this causes them any grief with the park visitors and he confirmed that “yes” there is frequently a “discussion” about this policy when campers enter the park with reservations and are then charged the additional fees. To be fair, it is very clear on the reservation website (Reserve America) that you will be required to pay these fees.
